What to look for when buying wrist braces
Before we start buying our first pair of wrist guards, the following features are what we should focus on.
Wrist length
Most wristbands are available in 16", 24", and 30" lengths. Yangzhou jiwei offers unique 12" women's wristbands and 18" men's wristbands. Both are ideal companions for most workouts.
A longer wristband doesn't necessarily mean better coverage. Here's why:
The longer the wrist brace, the more support we get. But the disadvantage is that it will inevitably produce bulky bulk on our wrists due to the wrapping, which may not be suitable for the exercise we are doing. If such a package affects training-related purposes, it is contrary to the purpose of using wrist guards to improve training effects.
If we are beginners to wrist braces, we recommend starting with shorter ones. You can start with short, less auxiliary exercises and gradually improve. Everything that follows depends on the subsequent muscle training requirements, and then gradually increase.
Wrist hardness
Just like the length of the wrist brace, a wrist brace made of stiffer materials does not automatically equate to a better wrist brace. It is not difficult to find that a series of wrist guards have different flexibility and stiffness. We should choose one according to our own exercise situation.
Generally speaking, if we are doing a high-repetition workout, such as CrossFit, we may need some additional flexibility in our training in addition to hard strength. For example, it's fine to keep your wrists stable during exercises like kipping pull-ups, but you obviously don't want your wrists to be completely stiff as this will affect performance.
If your focus is on weight training, such as weightlifting and strongman, then we recommend choosing a harder wristband.
Wristband material
Depending on your fitness goals, we can find two types of wristband materials:
1. Cotton wristband
This type of wrist brace tends to be thinner and more flexible. It can also keep our wrists dry or allow more air to escape during training.
2. Nylon wristband
These wristbands are typically sturdier and made of cross-stitching, multiple layers of nylon and Velcro held together to make them more supportive.
Sensitivity
Not all brands of wrist guards are created equal. You may need to try a few more brands until you find the one that suits you best. However, it is important to remember that no matter what brand of wristband, there will be an adaptation period to adjust and break in. It's normal to be a little rough at first, but the more we use it, the faster we'll adjust to the feel that suits us.
type of activity
We touched on this above, but certain brands of wrist guards are better suited for specific sports and training. Here is a list of common exercises and wrist support materials that may be appropriate for the activity:
• Powerlifting: Nylon
• CF: Cotton
• Bodybuilding: Cotton
• Strongman: Nylon
• Targeting weight loss: Cotton
Wristband service life
Generally, the more durable our wrist guards are, the longer they will last. The longer the package lasts, the more rewarding the investment in this gear will be for us.
That’s why we need wrist guards made of sturdy materials. After a few workouts, they shouldn't fall apart or start to show signs of wear. When purchasing please note the materials, stitching and recommended directions for the type of movement involved.
Frequently Asked Questions - Frequently Asked Questions About Wrist Guards
We know the benefits of wristbands, and we've found one we like. Now, let’s answer some of the most frequently asked questions about wrist braces.
1. Do I have to wear a wrist brace throughout my workout?
Despite their benefits, wrist braces can be overused. Buy a good pair of wristbands to enhance your performance, not to replace your pure strength.
Don't wear wrist braces throughout your workout, only when necessary. For example, we should wear wrist wraps during formal sets rather than warm-up sets.
Seriously, we should even limit their use to certain formal sets to allow ourselves to maintain high levels of strength and strength gains without using gym equipment.
For example, if you're doing a weightlifting workout where you're doing your heaviest presses or trying a new challenge set, this is where wrist wraps are obviously helpful. But for those lighter training sets, don't use it too often.
2. If I have had wrist problems in the past, can I wear a wrist brace?
Of course, that's right. In fact, if such an injury occurs, we strongly recommend wearing a wrist brace to ensure safe training.
Previous wrist injuries or surgeries can cause complications during our own workouts, especially if we try to push heavy weights. Wrist braces can provide the necessary stability and support to reduce stress on joints and connective tissues.
What's more, the wristband can prevent further complications, such as tendonitis.
3. Can I wash my wristbands with sportswear detergent?
We do not recommend washing the wristband in the washing machine with clothing. Instead, you should hand wash them in the sink and let them dry throughout the day.
Modern washing machines tend to be a little rough, and they can shorten the lifespan of your wristband.
4. Is it okay to warm up while wearing a wrist brace?
We wouldn't recommend this. As we discussed above, wrist wraps should be used as a way to assist with exercise, not as a shortcut. Therefore, there is no need for us to use wrist guards at some time points when there is no need for wrist guards at all.
5. Will wrist braces make my wrists weaker?
As long as we use it correctly according to the instructions, wrist braces will not weaken our wrists. In fact, they promote the natural stability of your joints.
Having said that, if we wear too many wristbands, we will inevitably create a dependence on them and reduce the natural sheer strength of our wrists themselves. We may also increase our risk of wrist and elbow strains.
